01 — A letter from the founder
Why I'm building this.
I'm Peter. I co-founded a successful startup with more than $25mn funding and was its CTO for eight years. After we parted ways I made a one-month trip to Thailand with my wife. Net, it cost the two of us about five days of full-time planning for a 30-day trip — multi-leg flights, partial Airbnb shares, Notion tables with cancellation windows hacked into the comments, Booking for some stays / Airbnb for others / Revolut paying for half, family meeting us halfway through.
By the end of week three of planning we were biting each other's heads off and we just stopped — locked the flights, locked the long-term hotels, gave up on the attractions. We flew to Thailand too tired to look at it.
Afterwards I asked twenty-something friends what their last complex trip cost them in planning time. The answer landed somewhere near 20% — a fifth of the trip itself, spent at a laptop before the trip starts. In the age of AI, that has to be solvable.
I've been here before. I read up on trip optimization while studying in the UK — ticket-splitting, money-saving-expert hacks, longer layovers to see a city without paying for the stop. I did the same task several times because I wanted to customize the experience, not just spend less. The tools couldn't hold the customization.
So Viamente is the tool I wish had existed in 2024. We're starting at planning mode. We're going further.
